Is there any way to tell by the marks on the bottom of a japanese ginger jar or japanese vase whether it was originally expensive vase or value-priced?

I know little but the first place to check is on Gotheborg to try and find the maker, and move on from there.
Hopefully JWendell will be along to help with your questions.
