Found this the other day and brought it home: I could not resist the blue! A magpie am I !! I have long admired the Amphora Pottery of Turn-Teplitz, Austria. Over the years a few of their pieces have come into my possession and only one remained until the other day.

It is a later piece as can be seen with the stamped mark of "Made in Czecho-Slovakia" - which places it after WWI.

But it was the decoration that caught my eye.

The four handled lustre vase has been overpainted in blue and decorated with the Glasgow Rose and a red heart. Daisies abound!

I've found others on the net that bear the earlier mark of Paul Dachsel when he went out on his own from 1906 until 1911 to form Kunstkeramik Paul Dachsel. Paul Dachsel was the son-in-law of Alfred Stellmacher, the founder of Amphora Pottery.

I'm hoping that someone else can provide me with some information about these pieces.

its a lovely vase in pottery. Not my country of collection though for pottery. Think they are pushing it though calling it lustre, that glaze is hardly shinning bright!! But in those days they got excited to get anything lustre! No that mantel still goes to John Hancock who went on to design his famouse Tunstall ware with designs similar to Moorcroft with his own pomegranate range.

Good luck finding out. I quite often look at the Czech pottery as I have this search field in Czech. I can't say I like it yet but I have warmed to it. Still prefer the great masters of the UK and Italy/Greece.

i just re read my post, I hope you didnt think me being too critical. I think yours is a great fine and one of the nicest examples as it is in a beautiful blue. And the style has terrific definition. Some times when I wake up and start writing I ca forget about the detail and just get focussed on one trait.

      It is very nice....

Have you seen this one? http://amphoraceramics.com/amphora_p3/dachsel/dachsel_4_handle_flower_881.htm
It seems very similar to you
I could not found an Amphora unbroken piece at an affordable price here, they are magnificent and their history too
    43. vetraio50 vetraio50, 10 years ago
Hi KIVATINITZ !!! Yes I had seen that one on the net .... the Paul Dachsel items look to be a bit finer to my eye than the Amphora pieces.

      Hello vetrai050 -
I need some education here. Looking up an amphora pot on line, they all seem to describe a vessel with two handles, not four?I don't anything about this type of pottery. Use to collect artisan pieces, then they seemed to go out of syle somehow, although I have a few nice pieces left. Many thanks!
    58. vetraio50 vetraio50, 9 years ago
Many thanks HO2CULTCHA, AURA, RÜCKLGLASS, KYRANTANGO & GILLIAN too !!!!
Amphora is one of the recurrent words in the history of ceramics .... Ancient Greece and Rome used amphorae for transporting liquids .... in Bohemia the word was used as a trademark ...... the same word was used later in Belgium during the Modernist period too.
