OK, so a newby here trying to get some information on this vase. I acquired it some time ago, maybe 20 years or so from an auction in Liverpool here in the UK. It came in a box of assorted treasures, it was not the specific item I was bidding on, so it was acquired by good fortune than anything else. It is a very Dark brown unglazed vase with sort of Middle Eastern tribal design. It has raised glazed Cabochons which I am sure are just glazed pottery. The base shows plenty of age-related wear and is glazed were it does not make contact. The inside is also glazed. The glazing shows very tiny cracking and is a kind of Grey/blue (predominantly grey).

Anyway this is a complete mystery to me. I would love someone to give me an idea of what and where from.

    Thanks Phil

This looks like Austrian Amphora pottery.

      Welcome !!!!

Thanks vetraio50, it has been mentioned to me before, however it is not so refined and lacks any kind of marking, which is a bit unusual I believe for Austrian Aphora?? I'm keeping an open mind on this one.

An English firm did similar work with jewels .... Bretby .... But they marked too. Impressed.

There was a period when stickers were used rather than indelible marks on exported items.

Interesting! Bretby is a very qualified guess, I'd say. They did produce unglazed pottery and, as vetraio points out, are known for decorating pottery with cabochons. It doesn't strike me as being French or German (and it is definitely not Danish) - British?

It's that domed base that really reminds me of Amphora pieces. Bretby would have had a much flatter base with stilt marks too !

Oh, I see - that makes sense. My two Bretbys have flat bases; I should have noticed!

Wow, thanks guys for all the feedback, I guess it's still something of a mystery? But I'll investigate the Austrian Amphora route further. Thanks to vetraio50 and jensen!!
