This one enters both of my interest in jadeite and hat pins!

On a 5.5/8" (15cm) stem is the most ravishing apple green 9/16" (1,4cm) jadeite ball, toped with a sapphire cabochon encircled with tiny rosecut diamonds, sitting on a cone shaped swirl of either platinum or white gold, millegrain setted with numerous rosecut diamonds.

I would love attract other hat pins collectors on CW to share their collection!

Thank you for stopping there :-)

I remember when we visited my grandmother, one of the most fascinating things was a pincushion in the shape of a shoe, loaded with a variety of interesting hatpins. Wonder what happened to all of them?

Kyra, love the combination of jade green and blue sapphire. How did people wear these? Just stuck into the hat or did they somehow also hold the hair-do in place?

Bluboi, your grand-mother's pin cushion with the pins on it must have been fascinating :-)

Hat pins had for function to secure the hat on the head, and were pinned through the hair and the hat. They were in use mostly between 1870 and 1920 (circa!). Before, hats were attached by ribbons, pins were decorative mostly.
The longest stems are on those around 1900, because of largest hats loaded with stuffed birds, millinery flowers etc, and big "pouf" buns.
They were then worn by pair, a law existed then to force women to secure the sharp end with a stopper to prevent wounding others!
After this era, fashion evolved to smaller hats and women bobbed their hair. So stems became shorter and pins had mostly a decorative purpose.
On cloche hats were worn the double ended ones, like jabot or cliquet pins.

It brings back memories of my grandmother who in the 60's, used to wear hats with pins. Thanks!
