A small size Excelsior oak slat trunk, probably the ladies hat trunk style. It has the patent stamped in the wood under the lock, which is very hard to see, but has Excelsior Patent Jan. 8, 1868. The wood tray was original with the trunk too. It's been my favorite oak slat trunk for a few years now. Probably made around 1885 to early 1890's. Thanks.
Thanks aghcollect!
That trunk, would be one of my favorites too Marvin.Love it!
Hey Marvin
Very Nice,
Did Excelsior have a full line of sizes?
Thanks Drill!
Ben, Yes, they made them in many sizes, from these "half" trunks to very large barrel tops about 38 to 40" wide.
Beautiful trunk. I haven't seen one this size before. most of the ones I've seen are the large barrel top ones. Understand why it is one of your favorites.
Thanks KathyKay, Yeah, I've only seen two of these in many years, so they are quite hard to find.
I love this!! Never seen one like this in this size.
TrunkerMarvin, this is very nice!! I have never seen an Excelsior hat trunk before. As Drill said, it would definitely be one of my favorites as well!
I have yet to see a hat trunk and I hope when I do it is of this quality. Simply an amazing piece of history.
Amazing....
Thank you myoldkyhome, jscotto363, JonB, and trunkman! I appreciate the comments.
Hi, I love your trunk. I have one like yours but mine still retains its original interior compartments but unfortunately missing the front straps and the side handles Did you replace your handles if so where did you purchase them? And the hardwear that holds the leather handles. You can view my trunk under excelsior trunk collectors weekly. Thanks for posting????
