This is a wooden counter display box which would be on the counter of a store for selling Mason's Challenge shoe blacking polish. The box dates to the late 1800's, and is of simple construction. It held three dozen of #4 polish. On the inside cover is a colorful lithograph which lasted for over 100 years.
Also shown is Gold Dust washing powder. This product was first introduced in 1889. The mascots were the Gold Dust Twins, and the slogan was "Let the Twins Do Your Work". As other companies came into being, the Fairbanks company eventually closed.
in photo one...I have a framed print of that same image. Purchased at an antique store, in an old "barn wood" frame. I have yet to remove the image/print, unknown if its a reproduction....nice find for you!
