I located this adorable small trunk which is in poor condition on Craigslist. I fell in love with the size so couldn't pass it up even knowing the work it will take to make it look good again. The leather was removed or rotted off years ago so the wood is dirty and stained, all of the metal on the lower half of the trunk has rotted off due to being stored someplace damp. I have to replace a lot of the metal and some of the wood on the bottom. It is 18 wide, 14 deep and 16 at the tallest point. It has the original tray, which was another selling point for me and the makers label on the inside of the lid, made by Hearn New York. I was able to remove the label in one piece and I will place that back in the trunk after I get it cleaned up. It has a brass lock which should clean up nicely.
KathyKay - Can not wait to see what you do with this one.
Nice to see that you got this one,I was looking at it yesterday it was a little to far for me. Glad it went to the right person, now it will see new life.
Drill - I live in RI, being a tiny state getting anywhere within the state is quick, round trip to buy this one was only 30 minutes. I picked it up this morning which left me plenty of time to start taking off the rotted out sections of metal. Next step is to take metal off of one of my junk trunks to replace the bad sections on this one.
Hi Kathy ,Much luck with it I'm sure you will do a swell job.I have not seen a Hearn label anywhere,The information that I'm finding, is that the company was established in 1827 . Wondering if it is James A. Hearn the 1st address 775 Broadway address. or the west 14 st address (I kind of save rare trunk label images) I am wondering if it is Hearn Bros. store or an early label one with just the Father. Seeing the label might be neat.
It already looks good and it has the insert. You can't go wrong with this one.
Drill upon closer look at the label it is a store label Hearn located on 14th and 13th street in NY. The label stated they had trunks, satchels and bags - the largest assortment of fine goods in the world. Will scan a picture and update this posting with it.
Thanks Kathy for putting up the label the label the 14th and 13th st.stores were opened in 1879 by The Sons James A. Hearn and George A. Hearn. There is a long history of this company,as it was Macy's competition for decades.
