This is one of the most amazing finds I have ever found in my life. This was just put out on the table of one of the stalls at the fair. I saw, seized and paid. I won't say how much. But it was the price of 2 people eating dinner at Wendy's :). I looked at the belly of the elephant and indeed it was signed. I believe this was carved in the 1800's or? The carving is so masterfully executed. I am in awe of this piece. This piece measures about 1.50 x 1.00 x .75. Amazing condition with agar appropriate wear. I believe this is natural Baltic Amber. Thanks for looking

I believe Jim is looking for confirmation that there are two holes through which a cord would have been threaded. That doesn't appear to be the case with the elephant's nostrils. (Hard to believe the carver would have done that, as that would make the tip of the trunk a very weak point.) Are there two such holes anywhere on the elephant?

Noob, took the picture. Hope this helps. The trunk is amazingly carved. Very delicate. I am not complaining

Jwendell222, the 2 holes are on his right butt cheek. And they do connect.

Jim, what is INS forums ?
    10. cogito cogito, 10 years ago
International Netsuke Society (INS). They have a good forum with helpful people. It would be worth getting their opinion. I'm not aware of typical wear patterns in amber, so I can't speak to the piece. In ivory, however, you would want to look to see if the piece had wear where the piece came most in contact with body of the individual wearing it and for discoloration suggesting wear patterns. I find it curious that the signature appears to be painted, not inscribed.

Cogito, the name is etched and darkened. It's a beautiful piece

I love it fantastic score lee it doesn't matter what you paid for it if you can afford it & love it as you do. I would say it's a keeper by the sounds of it. Take care. xoxoxxo
