I love Murano Battuto glass, and this is the piece that first caught my attention. Some years back, Gloria and I were at the Pier Antique Show in N.Y., and I saw this vase. I was seduced by the textured finish and the red core glass. Unfortunately, it was more than I was willing to spend at the time, so I had to pass. I later regretted it and had been searching for one ever since. Recently, one finally became available, and I was able to get it. It's a Murano, bottle shaped, Battuto Sommerso vase and was made by Alfredo Barbini circa 1962. The inner glass is deep red which has been submerged in a light blue glass. The Battuto (hammered) finish is then applied as small facets are cut using a grinding wheel. In contrast to the other Battuto vase I posted earlier here at CW where the facets are large, this one has smaller cuts which is more commonly found on these pieces. It measures 10" h and weighs 14 lbs. An example of this vase is documented in H. Ricke & E. Schmitt, Italian Glass, Murano, Milan, 1930-1970: The Collection of the Steinberg Foundation, p 246, Figure 252-3. As always, thanks for looking.
