I purchased this Trestle Style Bench 8 years ago in 2007 for $25 at a flea market and do not know why except maybe it was such a good price and so massive. I brought it home, gazed at it and put it into storage. Its original purpose is unknown, but it was later used as a work bench, stains, nails, saw kerf cut and deep cuts and scratches indicate this. All of which now add to the charm. Last summer, I lightly sanded, stained, and applied 3 coats of Spar Urethane to protect it from outdoor weather.
Bench top is one piece board measuring 76" long by 18 1/2" wide by 2” thick. I believe it may be cherry and is very heavy.
Note the peg and wedge construction of legs, hand cut octagonal oak legs indicate immediate craftsman.
Sits a little high for comfort, 21 1/4", indicates to me that its intended purpose was for working or displaying products such as produce at a market or Amazon women.
Age of construction is unknown, but 20th century nails were used in construction of underlying leg braces, possibly 1920 through 1950.
Any thoughts on its purpose are welcome
i love this bench!
Amazon women, for sure!
