Thought I would share this in honor of Orson Welles who would have been 100 years old this May 6th. Born in my hometown of Kenosha Wi. Printed the same year as his famous radio program.

      Awesome!

paulmartin: I don't suppose you would be able to tell me if the artists of the cover images for these books are mentioned somewhere in the editions? I'm doing a project where I analyze early book covers from The War of the Worlds and I'm trying to track down information on the artists of the images.

aghcollect: I'm lookign for the artist of the orange Grosset & Dunlap edition too, actually. Do you have any info on the artist/creator of the cover image for the orange cover you posted?

Thank you both so much for sharing these fantastic covers!

brunswick--That story is really fascinating and is also discussed in the project I'm working on. One of the more interesting accounts of it I've found was in:

Campbell, W. Joseph. Getting It Wrong: Ten of the Greatest Misreported Stories in American Journalism. Berekley and Los Angeles: University of California Press, 2010.

Apparently a lot of the "panic" has been overstated, but still really interesting. My favorite historical relic related to reactions to Welles's radio play is this political cartoon: http://torontoist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/20131025starcartoon.jpg

      Neat stuff!
