Picked up at local second hand store. More I look at it, the more intrigued I became. Have seen lots of Italian pottery/art, but nothing like this one. I am very familiar with Capo, and would suspect it is similar based on the detail and 3-d but it is not colorful or delicate. There are soldiers wearing armor and utilizing weapons; bow & arrow, swords, ets. Slayed civilians wearing only a cloth wrapped around the waist, laying atop the ruins of a building? I see columns, arches, and other structural elements below, to the side, and in the background of all the action. Upon examining this bowl, I also noticed the edging has additional detail, from faces/skull, snakes, and dogs. What I thought was damage, turns out to be additional clay added to flat part of the rim to enlarge or correct? Though glazed in brown, there are a couple dark spots and I an not sure if it occurred from age or was intended. On the backside are the letter spelling ITALY, all in upper case letters, raised, and not very even at all.
Can anyone help me determine who sculpted this bowl, or at the very least recognize the signature of Italy. thank you in advance. I hope you find this bowl as interesting as I have. (approx 13"w )Christina
