thank you vetraio50! can you tell whether this is silver or not by the hallmarks?
This is not English silver nor silver plate.
I'd go for silver plate.
vetry weir animal head in the middle.
Looks like a kangaroo!
Very weird animal head, sorry!
I'd smell it!
Can you tell the difference between silver and silver-plate by smell.
Silver plate is quite distinctive ..... nickel!
All these are too beautiful to scrap ho2....I would guess the fact that this piece is hallmarked at all means it's silver or why bother . You can find what the marks mean. I know the one letter is for the date. Then there's the assay mark, purity marks , sponsor marks etc. Should be lots of sites to help decode them.
yes, i can tell silverplate by the smell. but this piece has NO smell whatsoever. the inside looks like silver.
i just added a pic of the inside of the cap. it looks like silver to me.
The bamboo handle wrap is interesting too. Obviously for insulation but it seems a bit of an anachronism!
yes, racer4four, it is an odd piece. i imagine that the bamboo was so that nobody burned their fingers when the pot held hot liquid.
Really does look silver for me!
I was thinking Dutch, but the hallmarks doesn't match...

Stunning jug I love the intricate work done on it
The marks look more Far Eastern to me, but I'm terrible at marks, so take that observation for what it's worth. It's a pretty pot!
thank you katherinescollections, Zowie, and kyratango!
this polished up very nicely!
here's some pics of this piece polished and a better shot of the bottom. you can see that the top letters are W & G.
Good job!
thank you kyratango. i'd love to hear if someone recognizes any of the marks on this piece. it's a mystery piece for me and i kind of think that it is some kind of silver and not plated, even though it's not marked 'Sterling'.
The two men playing there instruments I have just noticed it gets better every time I look something new to see
Thank you Zowie!
