I'll just let you know that Calligraphy is the name I give this glass series, for obvious reasons. I don't know what Iwata called it.
Three vases from the series, all quite different.
The white pulegoso glass of the baluster vase has an almost grey tinge to it and the clear case on it is relatively thick. It is very intensely marked with black and has an inky motif on three sides of the vase. They were pretty generous with gold sheet on this one!
The fat bottomed vase (does that shape have a name?) is whiter but is also less heavily clear cased. The "writing" on it is much clearer and involves less area of the vase.
The cylinder vase is quite different. It has no pulegoso (bubbles), is quite white, is very thickly cased, and weirdly the rim has been cold cut and polished. Why weird? I have NEVER seen an Iwata rim finished like this, and rarely see it on any Japanese art glass. Maybe it was a studio recovery action for a poorly flame finished rim?
I am not sure if this was a Kuri Iwata or Toshi Iwata design although I lean toward Toshichi.
I believe (but don't know) it was a 1960s production.
All largish, from 26cm to 28cm.
These are very cool Karen :)... maybe the one had a broken top and someone had it cut down...just a thought.

Little late with the comment. I have a cylinder style Iwata. It is one of my favorites Quite large and heavy. I love it. Finding this in Canada is like finding Gold in a sewer. Never seen another in this form.

Forgot to mention is that the one I have used the used the Pulegoso method of making glass. Do not know whether the lettering is art or lettering. Do not speak Japanese. If anyone can advise It would be appreciated then I could have it translated. Bonsai to all.

Thanks racer for the info. As I have said previously the vase is quite heavy and one can appreciate it more when handling it. It is deceiving how much work and skill went into its making.
