Hugh Jet Cameo Mourning Brooch...Rare item from a forgotten Era perhaps?I am not 100% sure if this is Whitby or Vulcanite Jet but the detail in the design makes me lean more toward Vulcanite because of the intricate carving of the lady's hair, both materials are highly sought after,so I'am told. This is a large size measuring about 2".The Jet Cameo Lady is set on either black Onyx or French Jet and the brass bale has a very ornate design with a working pin back.
Black Jewelry was very popular in Victorian times. In those days the Queen set the fashions of the day and when her husband Prince Albert died in 1861 she went into deep mourning for him. This mourning extended to her wearing all black clothing and Jewelry until her death in 1901. The rest of the British Empire followed fashion - wearing only black (sometimes for years) following the death of a loved one.
I happened across this pin at the flea market and was able to get it for a very good price of $10 I think I found a bargain but not too sure.It can't possibly be so old to be from The Victorian Era or maybe it is,who knows!
Thank you kerry10456,rottenvintage,mark and deanteaks,I am a little late with thank yous,I've not checked in with this item for awhile, sorry
I have decorated my bedroom and private bath in the Victorian Period. Just received a museum quality black silk 2 pc mourning gown. Is now on display with mourning jewelry, black fur wrap, black gloves and black beads, and broach, including black leather womens boots. Am glad to find someone else so into this era. I use it as much as possible.
