    i don't know much about it, just that it has been cleaned and given a new handle.

    when i found it it was all charcoaled and rotten, thought it would be nice to give it a second life.

      My guess is that it was used for forge work & the extra side straps were to offer some protection for the wood from high heat. You might research blacksmithing tools.

      also i was wonderring about the mark, ive seen it on more objects, maybe it is a universal blacksmith mark?

      it looks like that mark might have lettering. I think it is more probably a maker's mark rather than a universal symbol.

      ive added a photo of the same mark on a different piece, this one obviously says Germany, the one on the hammer says JHP,
