Forgive me, I won't collect the vase until Sunday...seller agent via an Italian family in one of our more Pompeii type villas/houses, we have an area here that is well populated by Italian Market Gardeners with big houses, big hallway and entrance tables and even bigger cash wallets....so why do I preface my vase story with this paragraph....because I have nothing else to fill in the text box because I don't collect until the weekend....
And I'm going to sack my selling agent/Collectors agent I use because I think she was up last night drinking her next commission cheque...that might explain why a gorgeous little Rosenthal Italian vase has ended up on her floor in one million pieces..you just cannot get good help.....won't be showing that one!!!
I know nothing about Empoli...beg your pardon, I know it's Italian, so I'm going to have to research a bit. But do we have any experts here?...from what I've been told, this vase is quite tall, 23 plus cm's, apparently it has 5 pontil marks, so I would assume they mean forks/prongs that the vase was mounted on...it's beautiful when the light is shone, it becomes "moonlight" in look almost opalescent.....the without torch light look is yellow and brown and purple tones . I will take a clearer set of photos once I've collected it...
Do we have any Empoli experts? Can you help me?
thank you to Kevin, Argh and Violet for the Loves...
Beautiful!!!
Very nice vase Anne. I'm not that familiar with Empoli, but here is some information I found: "When most people think of Italian glass, they think of the many manufacturers based on the Venetian island of Murano. But there is another area of Italy with a long history of glass production - the town of Empoli, in the Tuscany region, near Florence. There is evidence of glassware being produced in Empoli as far back as the thirteenth century. There are two main types of Empoli glass - "Verde" and "Cased". Verde (Italian for green) glass takes its name from the traditional green colour of Empoli glass, which was a result of the content of local sand used for glass production. Empoli manufacturers that produced Verde glassware include Vetrerie E. Taddei & C., Vetreria Etrusca, Vetreria Toso Bagnoli, CLAVE, and Vetrerie Empolesi. Later, cased glass became popular in Empoli, which consists of brightly coloured glass cased in a layer of clear glass, sometimes also having an internal layer of opaque white "Lattimo" glass. Some Empoli producers of cased glass are STELVIA, Cristalleria Fratelli Betti, Cristalleria Arno, CIVE, and SAVIA. There was, and still are, a large amount of manufacturers in the Empoli area involved in glass production, and it can often be difficult to identify designs by a particular maker, as any labels usually bore the name of importers, or simply read "Made in Italy". Companies that imported glass from Empoli include Alrose, Rossini, Guildcraft, Vimax, Enesco and George Hardy".

thanks Sean
thanks Rick. yes I too had found that listing. Ive actually been lucky enough to visit the region. Florence and Venice are such amazing places inj their own right let alone being the heart of the glass world in Italy...we jumped on a boat many times over which is the only way to see Venice and ended up on Murano Island along with many other parts of Venice. We were determinined to try and find where they made it so we gate crashed the walking tours, just smiled sweetly and in we went...and there they were in each little cave like studio, the great masters of glass, blowing till their hearts content...but not the pieces we see as modern vases but more traditional horses and animals with loads of glass lace as I call it.....
Empoli and Fritelli were further down in Florence region, so rurtal, so beautiful, such inspiration....I can see now with Empoli why the style are so different...I can see with Murano why they make the court jesters as there's all that history with their past of the asked balls etc and with Empoli, the colours of Florence are in this vase...
sorry, just reminiscing... :)
Can anyone assist? Where are all our Italians...lol
thanks again Rick...
Your very welcome darling!!!
I like most Empoli wares .. they are usually well made and some times over the top .. but in a good way .. they can be so eye catching still most are reasonably priced ..
Hi Anne, great vase and post! Lots of info for those that want it :) I was wondering, seeing your vase here and reading the comments whether you think this could be Italian..it's certainly a bit OTT & eye catching, and has a white lining. What do you think? :)
