I picked this beautiful little 5" jar up from Savers this morning. Unfortunately it's missing the lid. I've seen similar Nippon pieces that are called biscuit or cracker jars. The hand painting is wonderful with an egret wading among large lily pad leaves and flowers. The mark on the bottom is throwing me a bit. The characters are written in the same gilt that accents the rest of the design. Usually there's a stamped mark from one of the hundreds of factories that made these pieces. The painting was also sometimes done at other locations and maybe that's what the mark designates. It could be the artist's signature. I'm fairly sure it's Japanese Nippon though, but I wasn't able to find the mark on Gothborg's site. -Mike-
Thanks Ken :) ....I agree. A shame about the lid but the rest of the design sure makes up for it.
Great coloured piece mike , yes to bad for the lid, still very pretty.
