I was browsing a pawn shop in Thunder Bay, Ontario when I spied this - it was on a high shelf, & the owner of the shop didn't even know what it was or how much he should charge for it.
I love art deco & art nouveau, so I had to have it. I still haven't found any information about it (I tried searching on ebay but it's starting to look like it's the only one of it's kind, so I love it even more *LOL*)
It's about 4" tall, 3" wide, has the same image on all 4 sides, & has a slightly peaked top with a small hole (about the size of a pencil) in the middle. The hinges are still in working condition for the top
There's no markings on the bottom, I don't know if there ever were (you can't tell it from the photo, but it's not in that great of condition - the photo makes it look so much better than it does IRL)
Caffè is the Italian spelling for coffee, so surely Italian. Wonderful Art Nouveau decor!!!
The hole you mentionned is puzzling...
Welcome to CW :-)
I'll upload more photos (esp. of the hole) when I get a chance - probably in a couple days. I didn't think to take more photos & I don't have internet at home, so it makes it a bit inconvenient :P
A nice example of commercial Stile Liberty Italian design. Probably relatively rare too in that condition.
