I have so enjoyed the textural pottery on CW lately that I thought I would post these vases.

The taller, darker vase has been on CW before, but at the time I had no confirmation of maker. I know the smaller vase is Kurata and am reasonably sure the other is also.

Much Japanese glass is driven by their ceramic history and these two vases reflect common shapes in Japanese pottery. Both are very textural, and without light they could be mistaken for pottery.
They are matte, with spatter and threading of different but complementary glass colours.

Interestingly the smaller vase has an unusual base. The white showing is a pearlescent glass and it appears that this underlies the brown which cases it completely inside and mostly on the outside. I would love a glassmaker to look at these vases and give me some feedback on the techniques used to make them. I think they may be by Kanno Den one of Kurata's premier glassmakers but I can't confirm that.

I adore these vases. Subtle, complex, different, but so Japanese.
I hope you like them too.
