Each month here in Sydney there's a Collector's Fair on the first Sunday of the month at a dog track called Wentworth Park. It's a must for many of us with the collecting gene. Last Sunday I was able to find four things of interest to me. The first was this little box.
Information about Australian pokerwork is pretty scant. It was popular in the Twenties and Thirties. Australian motifs abound.
Popular designs found on Australian poker work of this period include Australian flora and fauna. Most notably these include gum leaves and blossom, waratahs, wattle and poinsettia flowers. Fauna also figured highly and included mainly koalas and kookaburras as well as other types of birds.
It appeared as a decorative form of design on a variety of household items made from wood such as vases, spoons, coat hangers, bowls, egg cups, coasters, doily covers and trays.
The quality of the work appeared to vary greatly, from that done by amateur hobbyists to professional artists.
It is rare that particular artists can be identified with a piece. I'm always hoping to find a piece by Olive Hughes, her mother Louise Tufnell or Harry Jones.
In this case I found a covered box with a flannel flower painted on the box and on the lid a drawing of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Unusual!
Beneath there is a Humphrey sticker. I have no idea whether Humphrey is the retailer or the artist. No one on the net has been able to clarify the role of Humphrey.
Oh that's nice! Really love the flannel flower - beautifully done.
The bridge is sparsely but very well done too. Even the box is a beauty. Clearly a professional job. What wood is it do you know?
I would have thought pine but wood is not a forte. Many thanks KAREN !!!!

The Quay is one of my favourite places .... Catching a ferry over to see Paul's mum is always a pleasure in itself and the ride back from Manly is a trip I do on my $2.50 Opal card each week.
Yeah it's been a long time for me but I use to love it when the old ones went through the heads & you would get thrown about on a choppy day
