    Rustfarm
    (42 items)

Need help identifying this very unusual tool. This was picked up at our local engine /tractor show a few years ago and we have been showing it to all the local experts and have continued to draw a blank. This tool is 42" long and about 5" in diameter. Some of the parts on this item have singular numbers stamped on them but no makers mark to be found anywhere. In photo three there are three graphite tipped pointers that correspond with the paper/fiber disc. Our best thoughts are some kind bore or tubing gauge that is pushed or pulled through the tube to measure accuracy of said bore and the information would be recorded on the disc. Or we could be totally off! Any ideas out there? Slackjack, have you seen this item before?

We thought possibly cannon bores as well. The construction reminds me of something made in the late 1800's, and thanks for the comment and the love.

I do not know this one, Rustfarm. It is recording the bore of something. But not much of a dial indicator for accuracy. Is the hardware SAE or Metric ? That may narrow the field somewhat. A bail on one end may have had a rope or cord attached. And tapered shoes on that end shows direction it was used. Good One !

I would have guessed it was a hand turn line reamer. Used to measure the diameter of a cylinder before reboring it for over sized rings.

The allen setscrews date to after 1910 patent. I'm still chewing on this.

Most interesting item. I do love a good mystery. It is likely a patented item. Have you searched Google Patents?
    7. Rustfarm Rustfarm, 9 years ago
I have not searched patented items yet, I look forward to doing so and thanks for the loves!

I wonder if it's lowered into a pipe, if it would graph a break or buildup by having the feelers move the inked pens on a round of paper.

I am leaning towards the same thing, TA. Wouldn't you think whoever designed this amazing tool would have left his name or company logo on this? I would certainly be proud of designing or manufacturing this tool!

Same with artists... sign your name as you wish, but please also place a legible rendition of your name. ;)

am leaning to being used in navy ship gun barrels to check the bores on the ship guns ...hay that sounds cool.. ....lol ..still guessing
    14. Rustfarm Rustfarm, 9 years ago
That sounds pretty reasonable, I will look into that, thanks.

How about a bore erosion gauge?
    16. Roycroftbooksfromme1, 9 years ago
