While I collect primarily Bohemian glass, I have lately also been drawn towards the work of the French maker Legras, due to their beautiful floral enamel work. This emerald green vase is 10" tall, and features chrysanthemums in raised enamel with Legras's distinctive very fine enamel work on the stems and leaves. The base of the vase has a smoothly ground pontil, and is marked in white with what is either a '4' or an 'H'.
I was happy to find this vase shown in the 1899 Legras et Cie catalog on the last fold-out page, in color. The catalog description says:
918
vase japonais
verre vert foncé
Décor émail, fleurs chrysenthèmes
75 cent. 1.75
Translated: N° 918 Japanese Vase, dark green glass, enamel decor with chrysanthemums, 75 c price: 1.75
Beautiful shape and decor :)
Thanks so much, Lee! :)
La crème de la crème :-)
Ditto sklo42, et encore plus.......;-D
Fabuleux et Merveillieux.
And what about GREEN COLOR, stand up beautifully.
Congratulations Michelleb007

Legras did some beautiful work. If you don't have the Legras books, I highly recommend them, they did some beautiful work that's often attributed to many other companies.
Lovely!!!
Although dangerous, I think it is great that you are expanding your focus. There is a lot of beautiful glass to be discovered...:)
sklo, Alan & Sean, thank you so much for your lovely comments; they are much appreciated!
Mac, I think it is dangerous, too! ;) I currently have three Legras...I came across them and started learning about them while hunting for Bohemian treasures...and now I search for them as well! :) One of the things that I really enjoy about glass collecting is learning all I can about makers I am interested in...and about glass that is new to me. I never tire of that.
Brian, I have been looking into getting a Legras book or two - can you recommend one that is highly regarded? I have been looking at "François Théodore LEGRAS Verrerie artistique et populaire française"; is that a good one to start with, or is there another you'd recommend? I have also bought a copy of one of their catalogs and have copies of pages from others, which are helpful. I have already started to see that some of their work is misattributed, much as Harrach often is. Thanks!
I also love the works of Legras. I don't have many but always keeping my eyes open.
smiata, thanks so much - I hope you have luck in finding more! :)
Such a beautiful vase Michelle! I agree with you... the enamel work is fantastic!!
Thank you, Rick! I am so glad you like it. :)
