A very unusual piece. I have researched but haven't come close to identifying this item. The third photo displays the top which would not seem to allow much room for a floral decoration unless only a single stem. It has a very unusual shape in that the base and top are almost similar and bulb shape in the centre. It stands about 32 cms high. The scenes appear to be Japanese and are displayed on opposite sides with reversal of male and female figures. The other two areas display birds and flowers. I have tried to identify the markings on the base but the closest I have come to is perhaps made in Kantani Japan (?) I also guess that this piece may be late 19th C. I would appreciate comments and corrections. Hope you like it.
ARITA - IMARI .... I think this is it ....
1474. Mark: 'Made by Hichozan Shimpo' (hi cho zan shim po zo). Dish decorated in Japanese Imari (Iro-e) enamels, from the Arita area in Japan. A trade mark used by Tashiro Monzaemon until c. 1900. Meiji period, around 1860-1880.

Thanks so much vetraio50 for all of that information and I think you are right! . I checked out Gotheborg but must have missed that originally. I find it rewarding to understand each piece's story, but still not sure if it would have been used as a vase or had another purpose.
Thanks for the luv vetraio50 and kyratango! :)

Good evening to you too kerry10456 :)
Thank you for your comments, appreciation and luv OAS. It is not open all the way through. A small opening at top then conforms to body shape internally and the base piece stems from the bottom. Yes, it could be considered as component of another item but I think you are right in identifying as a temple or palace "vase". So that's what it is! and mystery solved. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and the luv :)
Thank you too shareurpassion for the luv :)
The sad mono lingual sitting here thinks this beautiful Lulu.
Hi mono lingual :) ... thanks for your kind comment racer4four and luv. I think that I was very lucky to come across it but recently have been very clumsy and smashed a few lovely little pieces. I will just have to keep it well out of my reach. I have worked very hard at becoming Bilingual ... (I cheat!) LOL :) :)
