PLEASE ENLARGE THIS GREAT PHOTO-----What the devil is this the fancy ladies are driving in--It looks like a vintage car like the one behind it. BUT hordse drawn. Maybe a broken down auto which they decorated for the parade?? It has a steering wheel. I need a "car guy" over here to let me know more about what the ladies are in! Nice old car parked in the church lot behind them. looks like a small country town "parade" entry. I love this sweet candid photo from my collection. Can we date the car behind. ( about 1916??)I really am not so hot at dating old cars. Help!

They sure look proud of all that work they did, right?! I have no idea about the age but it looks like you are right about it being an old car. Very clever ladies, I do say...

Hi postcardcollect, I think you are right about being decorated for a parade. I'm guessing a 4 seater horse drawn buggy, but the wheels, mudguard and step have been covered in ribbon or fabric (maybe an Easter Parade?) The lady driver is controlling the horses with long reins however it seems (I took liberty of zooming in on her hands) she appears to be holding a scarf, or more ribbon around her wrists or even a hat to tie in with the theme. (?)

I agree that it looks more like reins rather than a steering wheel. What is being seen as a steering wheel is probably decoration. On the technical side, engines back then would have serious problems driving such large wheels & that's why wheels for cars got smaller.

I had an epiphany on the train today ... :) of course it is a buggy decorated to resemble a car in the parade ! It worked didn't it ? LOL
