My parents bought a general store in Southbury, Connecticut years ago. It was also the post office... This was a desk top that I acquired from the store. Does anyone know anything about it? I am curious as to the age of it. I am debating as to making it part of my home decor or getting rid of it. It is just the top. There are no legs on it and I am not sure if there ever was. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

That is a spool cabinet, supplied to stores by the thread company.

Hmmm... interesting! Thank you, slackjack. I will have to look it up! I've never heard of one!

It's a bit hard to tell with the pix too close. Need a full image of the case. I suspect it has been cut up somewhat.

If it were mine, I'd change it up a bit, change to maybe glass pulls, throw some 'shabby' paint on it and make it a jewelry box... but that's just me.

I would possibly put a mirror in the top there...

Slackjack - I know that there are pieces/slats that fit over the top drawers when you open the cover. I think only a few of them may be original. I am not really sure how to place them. I will try to post some better pictures. Thank you!

Great idea shareurpassion!! I am just curious of its origin. We've had it for years and I wonder what it was used for.

Like SlackJack said it was probably for thread and it was a sales desk that sat on the counter. Receipts or the "on account" books would be filled out here. (The flip top may have been the place to store the ledgers).

Thanks TubeAmp! I never heard of a thread desk. I had to look it up!! I never, in a million years, would have figured that out. Thanks again!

Just add the brand name Clark's thread desk, example: http://www.harpgallery.com/showroom/item15354.html
