Happy to have come across this nice old document box. As you can see in picture 2 -- it was in rough shape. Now the seller really wanted me to try to keep the old leather -- and I thought as a piece of its history I would give it a try. All of the old leather was stripped off -- rehydrated -- glued back on and the rest of the body has had one coat of tung oil so far. It still looks a bit rough but I love this look -- still looks genuinely old... awesome!

      Woah! Good job as ususal!!!
You could settle as an esthetic surgeon ;-)
But... not sure if people who would get their skin striped off, rehydrated, then glue on would appreciate to " still look genuinely old..." LOL

      OOps, read usual, not ususal!

Nice one T-Man!! I love these old document boxes. The hide coverings are usually either missing or irrecoverable. I love the way you were able to save the remaining hide on this box. It look great. Wonderful job as usual!!

Kyratango -- but how could I ever give up my work as a stripper? Thanks for the great humour and smiles....
Thanks jscott for the kind comment.... I really am not so good at detailing so working with things that look good in an "imperfect state" is my calling.
Thanks drill -- I am glad you like the look of it...
Manikin... well... you are so nice... glad you like it!

Ha ha good memory! You can attract cougars as a stripper, then propose your esthetic method ;-D

Hello Trunkman! How exactly does one rehydrate leather? Thanks.
    20. trunkman trunkman, 9 years ago
Trunkingforfun... well i do not know if anyone would recommend how I did it for this piece... the leather was so brittle I first applied a lot of mink oil. Did not seem to work so well so I took a drastic measure -- once I had all the leather off I soaked it all in water for a hour. It seemed to help and moistened it up enough to be able to reapply it on the box base. Again the leather was so far gone that that I took a chance and it did not seem to hurt it.

      Trunkman

I am going to try your method on a JL I just picked up. Thanks for the tip.
