This Legras St-Denis vase is decorated with gilt in the Rococo revival style. It is 7 inches tall, has a very nice tricorn shaped rim, indented sides, and is made of a high-quality ribbed pale green glass. Harrach and other Bohemian makers also decorated similar vases, but this vase illustrates Legras’s particular use of use of small rose garlands in the gilding, the almost sponged-on appearance of the gilt along the rim of the vase, and a base that is ground flat, with a large perfectly round polished pontil.

Just a note - Rococo style was originally associated with King Louis XV of France, and was popular during a period of about 1715-1775. A renewed interest in Rococo style led to a revival of the style in Europe between roughly 1820 and 1870. However, the Rococo style of glass decoration involving enamel work actually was used by both Bohemian and French makers from about 1860 up until about the 1890’s.

Beautiful.....but the rim looks like a fairy passed by sprinkling gold dust....as fairies do!

Sklo, your description is SO much prettier than 'sponged-on' ! :) And I completely agree - it must have been fairies. My four year old daughter and I just made a fairy garden last week together - I will have to tell her about the gold on the vase now. :)

Thank you, Peggy. I have been doing a lot of research into Legras, and it has been really interesting to go through some of their old catalogs. Having experience with Bohemian glass has been really helpful, since I am able to compare the two and notice the differences between them. It has been really enjoyable for me, too! :)
