On September 3, 1878 William W. Tucker was awarded patent number 207,631 for his Improvement in Cork-Extractors.

The corkscrew, which is marked with the patent date is rather brilliant, as the corkscrew first starts in the vertical position and the helix is turned into the cork. When the ring hits the top of the bottle, the little foot holds the corkscrew in position. Ultimately the lever is compressed, and the cork lifts out.
