Hi every one , just wondering if any one can help piece together some info on this sideboard/cabinet unit. I'll be honest I don't really know where to start. I taken photos of the marks I found on the back of the sideboard, when I searched Google for info nothing of any relevance came up.
Much appreciated for any help.
Are there two different kinds of wood?
I don't believe so robin56
I believe that the carvings are a veneer.
Its really hard to tell because the way the wood is varnished. Do you have any other info on this?
Just that of the photos is all I found , any advice on where or what else to look for ?
Are the drawers put together with dovetails or nails?
Okay. Found some similar heres the link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/art-deco-sideboard-cabinet-buffett-cupboard-superior-oak-top-quality-c1940/111573533457? nav=search. The back seems replaced.
Hey, the draws are put together with handmade dovetails and the carvings are all hand carved through the wood , no veneer. Thanks for all your help.
Also there is a back piece to this sideboard that isn't attached
Good! That means that ut is most likely art deco!
Hi there, Great find, and a nicely done piece.
Based on the style I would date the piece to the 1930's. The carving is reminiscent of French Deco, and likely done in the manner of some of the more mid line French Deco pieces. High end French Deco was very very modernist and streamlined, much of it using exotic woods. Less extreme Deco was more in this manner of carving and details. The label on the back could be either a maker or a retailer in London. I would venture the piece is of English origins.
The primary wood appears to be oak, which is common for the period. The drawers themselves, excluding the faces, along with the back of the item and some interior pieces would be made of a softer and less expensive secondary wood.
The finish on the piece looks nice, and also original, so try not to do anything to it other than clean and oil it.
