I can't quite make out the makers name on the blade. I would appreciate any help identifying this knife. What type of knife iy is would even be helpful.

Looks to be modern made and not an antique.
Poor quality blade-- maker in Pakistan, India....??.

This knife was probably made in Mexico between 40 and 75 years ago. This STYLE is commonly referred to as a "Mexican Bowie". Similar knives made in the Mediterranean and Philippines generally do not have balls on the guard.
Writing on blade is possibly Spanish for steel.

I agree with the Mexican Knife Maker answer. I found what looks like an exact match for your knife, made by "P. Lepe" of Mexico, but could find nothing on it's History. Maybe the mark on your knife is of the person, or company that took over the P. Lepe name? Just my guess, but too many things match up for a just a look alike copy. Either way, Very Nice Looking Knife You Have!
