Here's another cool find from Salvation. Not at all sure about the age or origin of this piece. There are similar pieces on Ebay that say they are vintage Aztec or Mayan face jars but no other info. That kind of leads me to believe they're possibly mid-century tourist pieces. I love the decoration and color even with the few nicks and abrasions on some of the raised features. The bottom looks worn like it's been around a while with some indistinct writing, but with all the fakes and reproductions out there who knows. Still worth the price of a few dollars though. -Mike-

      Hi
      Mike
Very nice find, I am not sure, but this look like a face on 2 different aspects.
One look happy(pic 1) and the other not so happy(pic 2), I am maybe wrong, but I will have this piece check by some specialists in this kind of Aboriginal Artwork.
Look to me very old, I know what do think, some tourists piece are made to look old, but I have some feelings on that one.
      Congrats

Hi Alan and thanks for the "love" and comment. Interesting thought about it being Aboriginal. Maybe one of our Australian friends here on CW might have some thoughts as to that.

The base looks modern to me, Mike, well actually the whole vase does, but I'm no expert. Certainly an interesting decor.

My feeling is still a mid-century piece Katherine. Either decorative or souvenir but I'm no expert either. The one on Ebay has numbers all over the bottom and I don't think you'd see that on an authentic antique piece. Here's the Ebay link it's quite similar.

Not Australian. Our native Australians remained stone age and did not make any pottery, and even their modern tourist wares are very rarely pottery.
I know very little about Mayan motifs, but the cross hatching here looks more African or even Melanesian to me.

Thanks Karen :).... It doesn't look particularly Mayan or Aztec to me either. African seems closer or it could just be a fantasy piece.
