This item was bought at a charity flea market Saturday. No one seems to know what it is, but it looks like a good one. Please help me identify this item and what it might be worth.
The hole is tapered for some reason. A guy at work guessed it held some sort of blade that wedged into the tapered slot and was used for scraping. But, seems like there would be a lot easier ways to make a scraper.
Good size reference, but need more detailed pix. (or I do). Any metal blades or teeth in the opening?
It does not have any metal blades or teeth. I'll get a more detailed picture later today or tonight. Don't have it with me at the moment. I assume you are mostly interested in the head of the device.
Seen one handle, you've seen them all.
Guess #1.....Strap Wrench Handle.
Strap wrench is a possibility. What straps would it have been used for? Harnesses, saddles?
Frisco, I think you have a sent, but wouldn't the "wedge" piece need to slide up & down? I see no slot on the side for that & wood seems unlikely for something that would be for a lot of pressure. Goke, I seriously doubt for harness's. Really a wide opening for strapping, so maybe rope. I have this feeling we are thinking in the right direction, but way off on the use. Exactly the same thing, only entirely different!
It looks like it could be a scraper without the blade. The tapered slot holds the blade with a wedge block like a block plane. Just a guess.
Never really studied cheese slicers but a thought I would ponder & stir up imaginations.
BB2, it's obvious by the last photo that it is a "penny press".

Much as I would like to put in 2 cents....I won't just yet. Go back a hundred and fifty or two hundred years and strap wrenches weren't called strap wrenches and they didn't have side slots, they used a full leather loop through a slot you bound with the head. Removing wooden axle hubs comes to mind. Not sure if this applies but I was a bit younger when axle hubs were made of wood.
LMFAO Dave! That's great! Think you have been hanging around me much too long! I suggest you find better peers!! LOL! I'll give your "come-back" a 9 1/2!! Thanks for the laughs!!
