Pieces of this type by Loetz were decorated in a specific pattern, usually simply executed ornaments and flower motifs, either painted or etched with etching ink or chemicals from approximately 1900 - 1902.

The ground on this one is "maron verlaufend" (spreading chestnut), with a floral design around the top, giving way to leaf and vine decoration on a field of small dots or berries. Interestingly, it is also UV reactive. The twisted shape adds interest, and it is finished with a fire polished rim, and a ground and polished pontil. The numbers 3/21/26 are engraved on the bottom; presumably, this was a later addition for reasons unknown. It is not marked with the DEK number, however there is a link below to the decor page for DEK I/291 on Loetz.com, which includes photos of a marked piece in a different shape.

How do you think they applied the decoration? Was it a sort of resist before they applied some of the the salts for the iridescence?

Michelle, I'm not real good on the technical stuff, but it seems to me like there would have been a resist, exposure to vapors, then filling in fine details with decorator's ink, then perhaps a another exposure to the salts?

Thanks, Warren - that sounds like a good explanation to me. I just love how the decoration seems to fade into the beautiful maroon color towards the top of the vase; it is very elegant.
