This is a Richardsons shot ice jug. It has a classical shaped pouring lip and a barley twist handle with a prunt at the base. Made in the 1880s.
This not the most elegant jug in the world but it is technically very interesting for two reasons.
- It has a shot surface effect, this is where the hot glass is rolled in granules of glass and is reheated to embed and smooth them a bit.
- It also has a pocket of glass let into the back of the jug. The idea of this is that champagne or white wine could be cooled by filling the pocket with ice but not be diluted by the ice.
One problem with this is that the shot surface is like a dirt magnet and short of dropping it in bleach you can't really clean it. I am not going to drop it in bleach, so it is going to remain looking slightly dirty.
This is quite a rare thing.
Try using a tooth brush to clean it or pressure cleaner .
