This bedside water set is a reasonably recent make, and shows a couple of things about Japanese glass generally.

    1. They like orange
    2. The like acid or sand finished matte glass
    3. They love form as much as function
    4. They appreciate the hand made

I don't know who made this set, but they did well!

Fantastic colour. May I ask what makes it obvious to be Japanese? I'm trying to learn about animal figurines and other interests are costume jewellery and glass, so the more knowledge I can glean the better. I may aswell pick the brains of people who know far more than me!

How long is a piece of string?
Sorry Hamish I find it hard sometimes to extract what it is my brain says makes something Japanese glass. Here's some starters for you:
Orange glass is often Japanese: the Muranese and Czechs and Euro in general stayed away from it. The Americans did do a bit (Viking) as did the Canadians, but the Japanese used it quite a bit.
Japanese art glass can seem garish to Westerners - they love colour.
Their shapes are often traditional Japanese pottery shapes and different to most others. This is a very Japanese shape bottle.
The glass finish is usually very good: as with their cars etc the Japanese dont' just create things, they make them. Japanese glass will usually have a ground base (sometimes with a concave pontil grind also) and the rims of the glass are invariably flame finished, not cut.
I look at and handle lots of Japanese glass and after a while you learn it. The same goes for any glass: look at lots, handle lots, look up pieces here on CW, and after a while it starts to fall into place.
Glass can be a very steep learning curve!

beautiful and just love the Japanese for designing something as beautiful for something as practical as drinking water from a bedside table...
