A couple of weeks ago I went hunting in a new area north of the city and came across this little grotesque boy at a garage sale. It was an amusing design .... the woman who owned it was not sure of its purpose and for that matter nor was I !!!!

The open mouth reminded me of some grotesque ash trays that I've always lusted over but never had come across them in the wild. But the shape of this one suggested something other than an ash-tray ... how would you clean it?

The condition is very good. Not a chip anywhere. The enamel crisp and clean.

    Tooth pick holder?
Match holder? (No striker on this one.)
Or is it for hat pins?
    A pastille burner?

    Still not sure.

On the back are impressed digits 7207.

I suspect it is an unmarked example by Schäfer & Vater. Thuringia, Germany .... Volkstedt. The firm was created by Gustav Schaefer and Guenther Vater in 1890. High quality porcelain .... rich with kaolin that produced a product with a velvety texture and very fine grain. The firm finally closed in 1962.

I wonder what it would look like with matches?

      But no freckles !!!!!
Mind you the neck scarf is there .... But different too.

It seems the German company did export to the U.S. Sears Roebuck & Company after 1910.

I suppose so. In a den, bar ... On the net you see some with matches out of their heads that are really bizarre. I'll have to buy a pack of matches and see what he looks like, LOL !!!!!

Adore Schaffer and Vater, perhaps done with an old mold of them by a small company. Probably it is an exhibito for a shop like the publicity heads of Geniol here in Argentina http://articulo.mercadolibre.com.ar/MLA-570055020-antigua-y-muy-rara-cabeza-geniol-_JM

Thanks .... I saw that one .... It might well be used as a hat pinholes but in my opinion hat pins should be protected more with a cushion.
