In case you didn't notice I really do like this thing. So much so that I needed to experiment and see if the match idea did really work with the head. I had looked at a site where there are a few pictures of some Schäfer & VATER heads with matches on them .... the effect is really bizarre.

These days there are no matches at home. Gave up the bumpers years ago!

So I had to go and buy a pack .... 50 cents for a box of matches. Thank Heavens I don't smoke! I couldn't afford the matches these days !!!

How many matches do you think it took to fill up the little lad's head ???

Kevin! Would the holes on top of the head allow smoke to escape from the mouth? If so, I would think that it is more a "Smoker Ashtray" than a match holder. The open mouth suggests that. The shafer & Vater company did make Smoker Ashtrays and these ashtrays came in many grotesque and fascinating shapes. I'm not sold on the match holder use. I would have picked it up in a flash, had I seen it in that shop. BOB

I swear it's possible that might be an ashtray ..... the elongated heads that remind he so much of the Amphora pottery by Elvir OTTO have always attracted my attention. But if you look at the Schäfer & Vater site they have a few that with matches in the heads.

It might also be that they were used for both purposes ..... ???

      Carlopeto's site is here :

Smoker Ashtrays always have holes to allow smoke to escape from the inside of the mouth so yes, it could be dual purpose if some of the holes are not used by matches. Maybe just a Crown of matches would be best ....lol! BOB

I had a similar piece that was in the shape of a fish, the holes held toothpicks that you put cheese and snacks on for a party. Looked equally odd.

This is a scarcely seen match holder--certainly, an unmatched treasure!

Often, from Schafer and Vater, I see the figural match receptacle with the gaunt, elongated face and gaping mouth.

Thank you, Vetrai50, for your sharing this with me!
