I really love this free form bowl by Morikichi Inanime. A contemporary piece from his Rainbow Glass studio at Okinawa, Ryukyu, and demonstrating his use of natural materials to colour glass. .
Ryukyu is a series of islands at the very south of Japan, of which Okinawa is one. The glass from the Ryukyu area has a very regional style, and is quite different to glass from say Osaka or the North.
Inanime was born in 1940 and after leaving school started work at Okuhara Glassworks, making glasses for the American forces established at Okinawa. The glass used was recycled and this resulted in bubbles within the objects, so Inanime decided to work with, not against, the bubbles.
He has been a leader in experimenting with glass inclusion and colouring, experimenting with additives such as charcoal, raw sugar, tuna bones, rice bran and coffee grounds, to not just bubble but to also colour glass. His glasswork has been multi award winning, and he and his family are still making glass today.
I don't know exactly what was used to colour this bowl, but the white and purple sections have been coloured and bubbled by the use of some of his out there additives. The green and blue are possibly coloured by more normal means.

Weird and wonderful (and fully recycled!)
A list of his known colours:
Yellow - turmeric
Purple - sweet potato
Brown - coffee
Pink - charcoal
Light purple - rice bran
Very subtle !
