MissAntiqu…

I was given this trunk that someone had in the family from their great great grandfather. The wheels say it was pat in June 27 1877. In trying to figure out if this is something I should except or give back since I've never seen anything like it. I'm not a collector and would feel horrible to except something if it has extreme value besides the heirloom left to her. Please help as much as anyone can. Thanks
This is a nice dome top trunk from the late 1880's, as you have already deduced. A paper covered trunk was a cheaper variation at the time than a leather or canvas covered one. There would not be "extreme" value in this trunk -- accepting it as a gift I think would be appropriate as the monetary value is not high. I will say that the latches on this one are unusual and I hope they catch the eye of a few of our members in the "know" about them for comment. It is nice to have the tray and interior intact. All in all a nice antique trunk....
Nice original trunk. The latches were patented by H Vogler on June 26 1877, patent number 192355, and were used for quite a while after that date.
