I got a trunk from my in-laws a couple weeks ago (my first post), it turns out they had two trunks in the barn not just one. So I went and got it this morning. It was covered in leather, but it was in bad shape so I'm removing it. I was wondering about the shape of it. The top slat is at an angle. I found pics of "bevel-top" trunks, but it doesn't quite look the same as those. Anybody know? The latch also has a lever you slide over to secure it. Latches are marked "patented July.1.75".

Hello. The shape of your trunk is whatever you want to call it. Trunk makers would not normally described that shape. they would have said something like "Leather covered square, (or flat) trunk with patent bolts, 12 hardwood slats, and 2 centre bands" or something similar. Today we dwell much more on the shape then the makers did. Your latches (or bolts) were patented in July 1 1873 by J Arnold, patent number 140,338.
      Hope this helps,
      Jim

I think I'd go rummage around in that barn if I was you. If they've got cool things like this in there who knows what else they have stashed away.

HAHAA!! FatBoy64, I already have my eye on some old wine crates (has to be at least 20 in there) and an old whiskey barrel. And to many other things to list. They could stock an entire flea market!
