I found this cool brooch and when I got home I was looking at it closely and was there are letters on the gold tone backing underneath the enamel decoration. Has anyone seen this before? On the back of the brooch where the pin is attached, that will move a little bit. Not sure if I should be playing with that, but it has no effect on moving the letters on the front of the brooch. There are no markings on the back of the brooch. Any help on this will be appreciated!
Thank You!
Is that a bale on the back (4th pic) - kind of looks like one, but then again its' ends don't seem to be attached to the back.
Some of the letters I can see clearly, but if you could let us know what they are please?
Hope someone comes along with more wisdom to help.
It is a bale on the back - really it is a necklace hook that has been soldered onto the back. The letters look like they are Y (or X) E(or F) L, M,M,S (with a period) A, and maybe the number 10.
Could it be a coin under the decor?
There are 2 layers to the brooch: the gold tone starburst with the enamel piece on top of that topped off with the center rhinestone. I don't think it is a coin. The letters are on the first gold tone starburst layer.
In the 3rd pic -- I can see what looks like * EL*
Membership brooch of some society -- since the lettering is hidden so well, and not just out there??
It has to be something like a membership society - but what? Kinda weird. Anyone have a guess as to how old this might be? I am thinking late 50's early 60's?
It appears to be a "made piece" possibly for someone around the fifties. Most settings of that time were not high like this piece and the backing wssn't made like the one pictured. Someone could have made it for a "decoder" toy which was popular during that time
