I have had this trunk for nearly 30 years and I am looking for any information on who the premier maker of this piece was. I was hoping someone could give me any information on it. I live in Ohio (United States)
I appreciate any help you can give and thank you in advance.
Looks like it could be a Martin Maier trunk... based on the black edging under the stat clamps... perhaps you could post the picture of the hinge and take out the middle picture of the interior... the hinge will be more helpful in identifying. This is a FABULOUS trunk...
Looking forward to learning more...
Wonderful trunk, I have only seen two others of this particular top with the slats forming and X.They didn't have quite as much hardware though. It is also not a very common slat pattern on the front. It appears to be a Hillebrand lock patent /Star lock company. It is definitely a better make of manufacturer but that can be difficult with out the label. I too would be interested in pictures of the hinges,it could tell you more.

A similar trunk image found on Ebay under" Confederate trunk images" that's not to say that it is. older photo- hope it posts.
Drill -- the link did not work on my end.... did other makers (to your knowledge) do the black paint around the side slat clamps - or was that a Maier exclusive touch? (pic 3)
That is an awesome trunk.
Your trunk was patented on May 13 1884, and it says that on the top clamp. The patent # is 298453 and was patented by John B. Duguid of Toledo, Ohio. I believe it is safe to assume the Duguid Bros. trunk of the same city made those trunks. I would like to discuss this with you, please contact me.

hope this patent picture posts. The full description for this Dugid trunk patent
US 298453A is quite lengthy. As usual Jim is right on the money. T -man sorry it did not post. If you goggle: "Confederate trunk images" and scroll down you will find another version of this trunk. Ebay photos just don't post.
Really great to find out the maker on this one -- kudos Drill to you and Jim. I looked up "confederate trunks" -- got a lot of boxer shorts... had a good laugh on that...
and then saw the match on this one...
