I bought this book almost 15 years ago, in that time old books were affordable, and here in Córdoba those written in a foreign language were the cheapest. This book is in a Spanish but with some Barcelonés accent. When I saw the cover I was attracted by the bright green and the gold and silver accents, I was sure it was done during the era of Art and Craft (Picture 1), in fact the information on the first page surprised me because it was impressed in 1883 in Barcelona. It contain as the title informs three poems that were translated to Spanish here I woul refer only to the first one:
1- Angel of death by Johan Olof Wallin http://www.poetrynook.com/poem/angel-death-2 (picture 3). The Wikipedia says “His style is described as melancholic but ravishing, often dealing with death, with frequent references and quotes from the Bible. His grand work was the long poem Angel of Death (sv), finished only about year before his death. Compared to Swedish poets contemporary with Wallin, some consider him second only to Esaias Tegnér.” http://www.poetrynook.com/poem/angel-death-2 .
I could not believe that the illustrations of this poem had been done by Karl Larsson. I had always admire they work as a home decorator and interior designer. I did not know that after graduation he work illustrating books. In the official page http://www.carllarsson.se/encarl.aspx I could not find any new about his work in Spain.
Here I post one of the pages with a lot of symbolism about death and Masonic tradition.
In the next post the rest of the book with other artists.
Thanks to all for the loves
