This exceptional vase was acquired by me from Japan - I could not resist it.

Prior to it's arrival I was pretty sure it was Czech. The shape, the colour and the internal work looked Czech to me. However since it's arrival I am not so sure.

The base is not finished the Czech way. Instead of flat ground it is concave ground, like some Japanese glass, and the green is not as deep as the similar green from Czechoslovakia. There are also some imperfections in the glass: small bubbles at various points.

Question is: is it Czech? Something else?
    Any answers gratefully received thanks!

It sure has that Czech "Deco" look to it Karen. The internal rings are very architectural and really make this piece. :)

Thanks Mike. I agree those internal rings are pretty awesome!

What a fascinating piece, Karen. It really could go either way, European, or Japanese, has elements of both, but also elements that go against either. I will wait and see what others say. :)

Thanks Katherine. I know that at least one (possibly more) renowned Czech artists had studio time in Japan and so there is a slight possibility this is the result of those visits. I will probably never know unless someone can definitely attribute it as a Czech piece - at least there is some records for them.

I know you like Japanese Karen, but i will go Czech for this one, but it's just ME.
      Nice

I agree with all Karen, the rings make the piece!

Josef Svarc did this type of work for Bohemia Glassworks, circa 1959/60. I cannot say this piece is by him.

I have a vase which is definitively Czech work with a concave pontil mark. No one has ever been able to identify it, other than definitely being Czech.

Like yours, the concave pontil mark on mine appears to be more of an anomaly. Mine is likely ca 1960.

Thanks WB...it certainly seems very Czech to me and I am glad to hear of another concave ground Czech piece. Helps me categorize it at least!

VC I am looking at Svarc as a possible - thanks for the heads up.
