I garbage picked this trunk from curbside. I cleaned it up, but wanted to preserve the old character so just stabilized it and repaired the inner tray. It is covered in black metal, the slats appear to be oak. I'm not sure what kind of metal the fittings are. There are no makers markings on the trunk anywhere. The inside of the trunk is lined in paper, which was tiny sprigs, sort of floral like in blue on a white background. The top of the inner tray also once had a gray canvas-like cover. Can anyone tell me the approximate age of this trunk? I don't intend to sell it, I'm just curious.
Nice find -- I would say anywhere from 1910 to 30's. The slats are more likely hickory than oak. Have fun with it!
Thanks for your reply! I appreciate the information. I did find some information on the lock. It says Eagle Lock Company Terryville Conn. USA does that help date it?
Well the lock is common stock bought by the maker of the trunk -- most parts were
outsourced... but the style and form really tell the age on this trunk -- and they were made for a while like this in that time frame, even into the 40's -- so getting a specific date would be rather difficult.
Thanks for your help!
