The Fitch is one of only four typewriter designs that have the type bars positioned behind the platen, which swing down towards the typist and strike the top of the platen when typing.
The type bars on the Fitch are quite remarkable in that they are hinged and flop freely sideways when coming down to print. Two sloped guides ensure that type bars are brought down to the common printing point.
