    trunkman
    (149 items)

I am very pleased to highlight this trunk for you all. When I saw it I thought it unusual with all of the badges on the lid. Normally there is one row across the top -- maybe two rows -- but this is the first I have seen with three rows of medallions over the top -- I know there are others out there -- just I have not seen them. I used a golden oak stain on the brown alligator tin.. and it turned it an exquisite green hue. Just looks fab. Even comes with an original key. You can see the reptilian green better on the third shot. Fourth pic is the "before"... I will spend some time doing the interior which right now is missing the trays and is not much to look at.

trunkman, what an incredible trunk!! What amazing looking hardware this one has. You did such an amazing job bring this one back to life. But, all of your trunk work is incredible. That fact that this one also has it's original key is a major plus. Great job trunkman!!! Thank you for sharing.
    3. trunkman trunkman, 9 years ago
jscott thanks so much! Funny how I learn a little something new from each project. This one really has all the bells and whistles... I wonder if it is a Romadka? Every time I see a well endowed trunk I think of that maker... I now have a serious overflow of trunks problem. Have not learned to stick to the smalls.. and have not come even close to finding a nice hat trunk like your beautiful collection.
    4. jscott0363 jscott0363, 9 years ago
This trunk is a notch above many. The hardware just amazes me to no end! I have an alligator embossed trunk, but nothing to the caliber of this one. I've gotten rid of many of my full sized trunks and I've became addicted to the hat trunks. Unfortunately, my wife has dared me to bring another trunk, of any kind, home until I get rid of some of my existing trunks. This trunk just really stands out to me.
    5. trunkman trunkman, 9 years ago
Thanks js... the hardware really is spectacular. I had to go through a lot of hoops to acquire it -- but it was well worth the effort. I am trying to keep to my "one trunk in one trunk out" rule of thumb. Hard to let go of the nice ones I must say.
    6. Drill Drill, 9 years ago
Very nice trunk T-man I love the rounded metal edging on the top and bottom as
well as the metal under the medallions.
    7. trunkman trunkman, 9 years ago
Drill -- thanks so much -- hard to pass this one up... more difficult now to find ones of interest... my wife calls me a "trunk snob"... and well... so I am.... LOOK WHAT I'VE BECOME....
      oh well... could be worse...
    8. Drill Drill, 9 years ago
When I see that metal detail on the edging it reminds me of your R.L. Miller carpet trunk or a Reed, Atwood trunk. You don't see that detail that often It's a favorite of mine.Hard to say who made it as you know.It does make me shake my head to see so many wonderful trunks out there with no makers label. Just sent you a Craigslist post in W. Virginia of one with 3 rows of different hardware." Trunk snob" doesn't
fit your personality, (Your T-man) that fits. I've thought about my own growing collection,If I only collect the rare ones, When I'm all done collecting ,I think I'm gonna donate my collection to a transportation museum in my state. This way they can go on, because no one around me wants them or appreciates them for what they are :history.
    9. trunkman trunkman, 9 years ago
Thanks for that Drill -- indeed that touch of history -- the era of this particular craftsmanship -- I see them as works of art -- if I could hang them on a wall I would.

You mean like this? Or you could cart your small hat trunks around like jscotto
      in this thing.

OMG! That's amazing! I didn't read all the comments but I have to know, how long did this take you to refinish? It was worth every moment and the feeling must be so good to look at what you have accomplished here! Can't wait to see the inside.
    27. trunkman trunkman, 9 years ago
I thought it would take me a long time due to having to repaint -- but really it only took a few hours (maybe four hours max)... mostly just grinding off the old rust -- I just brushed stain on the center tin with a cloth and gun oiled all the outside black tin. I doused the whole trunk with a rust inhibitor first. Thanks for the lovely comment shareurpassion. Saved time by not repainting anything.
    28. Drill Drill, 9 years ago
Hey T-man ,can't you just picture jscotto building shelves like a mad man in his living room ,after a long day of loading lumber in the aisles of the depot.A Eureka moment for all those hat trunk ,Homer tool bucket and hammer in hand. The wife's jaw just dropping to the ground as she comes home. "But honey,-- I'm saving space" Now that's vintage.

Its amazing how resilient these are -- particularly this 1880's - 90's trunks -- they always come back to life -- thanks eye...
    40. eye4beauty eye4beauty, 9 years ago
When you open one up .... Usually takes one look inside to close the lid ... Amazing ... I was recently at a farm auction ... Someone got three for 175 dollars ... My buddy said ... They just got a steal ...
    41. trunkman trunkman, 9 years ago
There are still pockets of antiquing that are inexpensive and you can find great stuff -- trunks certainly would be one example. You can find great craftsmanship at very low cost and easy enough to add value. Do you find the same with glassware?
    42. eye4beauty eye4beauty, 9 years ago
Usually, when a thrift opens ... There is a small window of time when the pickers are literally looking for gold and silver ... That is when I get my better pieces ... No one really looks at art glass ... Then when the gold rush is over, well, time to find a new fishing hole ...

Hey T- man wondering if this guy had anything to do with all these dome tops.
    44. trunkman trunkman, 9 years ago
Drill -- fascinating -- I often wondered how they were able to steam these in a mold... certainly a press like this one would greatly enhance and speed up the process... and the bigger manufacturers must have had investment money to develop these techniques.

Hey T-man, Just thought I would share something that I came across. Many times
We seek to know who manufactured these trunks. Most times there are not labels
on the interior.Below is a link with multiple pictures that could help shed some light.

      https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/718821522023449

Wm. J. Runder Springfield Trunk factory .3 labels on the interior
A very similar trunk design to yours Elliot. I'm Not saying that it is
the same manufacturer because without a label it is hard to be certain. There sure are similarities that jump out at you.Take care.
    48. trunkman trunkman, 4 years ago
Thanks so much Drill! Appreciate the link and yes very similar... particularly the shape and dimensions of the dome plus trim. Certain configurations are typical of a few makers so definitely can link this as a strong possibility. Appreciate the look see.. stay safe !!
