I found this vase today at Goodwill. it says 'Japan Cloisonne' on the bottom rim. i was very surprised to see in my photos of it, a hidden image of a flying swallow on the back!

Appears to also have a hidden image behind the flowers, but I can't make it out in the pix.

thanks SEAN68 and blunderbuss2! this is an extremely popular post on a japanese antiques/pottery fb site.

i think that this does have a Sato logo - under the glaze on the bottom. some fb people think that this is 30s/40s, while others say it's 50s or even 60s. regardless, this blue color is very rare and sought after.

to confuse things, i think that the upper rim is silver and the bottom rim is nickle! have you seen that before, Lisa?

the top rim is a little bit off where it was bumped, but it can be fixed pretty easily. the bottom rim looks more off-round, but can probably be fixed as well. the piece is in perfect condition beyond the rims. no scratches at all.

i haven't found any other blue ones anywhere. have you seen this color before?

no, not depressing at all! i didn't think anything of it when i first picked it up. i paid $2 for it, so i'm very pleased. i did think it was cool when i saw the birds in the photos i took of it - hadn't noticed them before. i saw pics of others online which look like they had nickel bottoms and silver tops too. it's 7.25" tall. thanks so much for your help w/ it!
