My first piece of Scottish glass .... a Sea Urchin P3 made by Strathearn Glass Ltd., Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland.
It seems that these paperweights come in three sizes: small, medium & large. The larger versions have a different Strathearn catalogue number of D1 and come in a smaller range of colours.
In this case we have the smallest size of Sea Urchin ( or P3).
Yesterday this was my find at the monthly Collectors Fair at Wenty. It stood out from the other paperweights for sale by the seller and it bore a paper sticker .... I have not found a signature and I believe they are unsigned.
In his book Robert G. Hall called them 'Rare Crown weight’ on page 58 of 'Scottish Paperweights'. Strathearn called them Sea Urchins. I must say that I thought it looked like a sea urchin .... the orange colour might have helped too! The catalogue referred to them as having a "rough texture sea urchin appearance". There are twenty vertical rows of Scottish Sand over an internal coloured base. The sand has trapped bubbles within. The available colours are red, green, orange, blue and white.
The small versions are under 2.5" ... the mediums just over 2.5".
The dimensions of my weight are:
6cm wide - 2.36"
5.5cm high - 2.16"
334gr or 12 oz
Concave base with rough pontil.
Exactly when they were made is not clear as yet but it is believed to be between 1965 and 1979.
love this paperweight! It does look like a sea urchin
